ABSENCES
Absence from School
When a student is absent from school for any reason a note is required from the parents. This is a legal requirement. Phone calls are appreciated but the student is still required to bring a written explanation on their return to school. If written explanation is not provided after 3 days, the roll teacher will contact the parent/guardian.
Notes should state:
- the date/s of the absence/s;
- the reason for the absence/s;
- the child's full name;
- the signature and name of parent/guardian.
The student should hand the note to her/his roll teacher.
Lateness
- Students are expected to be in their classrooms:
- by 8.30 am for roll call;
- within five minutes of the bell or change over.
When late to school (ie. after 8.40 am) students must:
- report to the Front office with I.D. card to sign in
- provide a signed note from a parent / guardian satisfactorily explaining the lateness.
(Unsatisfactory explanations include such reasons as slept in, etc.) - the FO will issue a dual late pass; one for entry into class and one to be validated by a parent/carer if a note was not supplied on arrival at school. This should be returned the next day.
- Consequences will be issued by the FO for repeated lateness. (Four unexplained lates in a term will result in a litter duty, six unexplained lates require a parent interview).
Permanent Late Pass
In special circumstances, the SLCSS will issue students with a Permanent Late Pass. eg, students who travel on theTransborder Bus or students who are required to attend daily morning training. These are issued on a term basis by the SLCSS.
A register of students with Permanent Late Passes is kept in the SSO.
Students with these passes should sign in and then go straight to class, and show the Permanent Late Pass to their teacher.
Late to Class
Students who arrive to class late must have a 'Late Pass' or their diary signed in the "Movement around the School” section.
- signed by the teacher on duty in the SSO when the student has arrived to school late; or
- signed by the teacher or staff member responsible for detaining the student.
The SSO does not issue Late Passes to students except those arriving late to school or who have been detained by a staff member in the SSO.
Leaving Class and/or School
Pass From Class
It is expected that students will remain in their classes for the whole lesson.
When it is necessary for a student to leave class (eg. to go on an important errand, go to the toilet, to seek First Aid assistance or visit the library), the teacher must issue a signed and completed Pass from Class slip or a note stating the reason for the pass including the time and date or complete the appropriate section in the student diary.
Students going to the toilet are expected to show their note to the front office staff.
Permission to Leave School
If it is necessary for a student to leave school during school hours, he/she must:
- bring a note signed by a parent/guardian stating why the student needs to leave school and time the student is required to leave;
- take the note to the front office before school commences, recess or lunch and collect a signed note from the front office;
- show the form to the appropriate class teacher at the time they need to leave school.
When a student requests to leave school for any reason that has not been pre-arranged with the parent and explained with a note, the parent will be contacted and verbal permission gained from the parent, before the student is permitted to leave school premises.
Lunch Passes
Lunch passes may be issued by the SLCSS to students on receipt of a letter from a parent/guardian. The pass will enable the student to go home only, and on the guarantee that the student will be supervised while at home. No other student will be allowed to accompany them. Hawker shops are out of bounds to students during the day.
Sickness
- Students who are unwell should report to the front office staff with a note from their teacher.
- Students who are sick in class are required to obtain a signed note from their class teacher and report to the Front office staff.
- Students who are unwell will be accompanied by another person to ensure they reach the Front office staff safely.
- A student must not leave school or go into the sick room without first seeing the front office staff. Parents will be contacted if it is advisable for the student to go home.
- Medication will not be given without the permission of a parent. This includes paracetamol.
