ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING
Students are assessed on tests, assignments, practical sessions, oral participation and other class activities, with emphasis on learning outcomes. Written reports are sent home with students four times during the year, indicative mid-semester and summative end of semester reports.
An Assessable Work Timetable giving students and parents/carers an overview of all major assignments and tests is printed in the School Newsletter each term.
Students in Years 9 and 10 who are not satisfied with the grade awarded for a particular unit may make an appeal within a limited period after the issue of a semester report.
ASSESSMENT CONSIDERATION
Students and their parents / carers may apply for assessment consideration in circumstances where a semester grade may potentially be significantly and adversely affected by –
- Injury or operation involving a lengthy recovery period
- Debilitating on-going illness (eg glandular fever)
- Personal or family trauma
- Approved extended absence (eg overseas travel with family, representative sporting tour)
- Other
Validation is required and depending on specific circumstances this may take the form of a medical certificate, signed explanatory letter from parent / carer, written evidence from an approved person such as a coach.
Consideration is based on the individual student’s performance relative to their usual standard and to that of other students in that class or at that ability level (in streamed classes such as English, Maths and Science).
Consideration may result in –
- Extension for assessment item submission
- Negotiation re an alternative assessment item (eg in PE where injury may prevent actual participation)
- Grade adjustment (eg awarding of the higher grade if close to the cut-off point)
- Status (this would normally apply to all units studied in that semester, not to a specific unit)
Class teachers, Counsellor and/or Year Co-ordinators may recommend assessment consideration by speaking directly with the Principal / Deputy Principal. Students and their parents / carers may apply for assessment consideration. The final decision is at discretion of the Principal / Deputy Principal.
Please complete and submit a signed application to the Deputy Principal, with appropriate supporting evidence. A copy of the school’s Assessment Consideration Policy can be accessed by clicking here.
