HOMEWORK
PURPOSE
Homework is an integral part of the high school program. It is important because it helps students to develop organisational skills, study habits and the self-discipline needed for further education and study.
Homework is important as it:
• allows teachers to concentrate during lesson time on work for which direct help and supervision are needed
• complements classwork because it gives students an opportunity for review and the consolidation of skills
• helps in meeting class schedules by allowing more time for the completion of course work. If only lesson times were used, course content and skill development would have to be trimmed.
GUIDANCE GIVEN
All students are given Unit Outlines in each subject area each term or semester. These state the course content as well as the assessment tasks and due dates. Parents should look for these, record the important dates, and check with the student as assessment items are completed.
BHS Student Diaries are issued at the beginning of the school year to Year 7 & 8 students and are paid for as part of the Enrolment Package. Year 9 & 10 students can purchase Diaries from the Front Office. Students are encouraged to use this diary to record their homework assignments and test dates. A Student Term Planner is distributed in the school newsletter. Major test and assignment dates are also published in the first newsletter of each term.
FREQUENCY AND AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK
• At least a week's notice is given for major assignments. It is common for a month or more lead-time to be given. Check the Unit Outlines.
• It is recommended that homework should be done every weekday evening, Monday to Thursday. Weekend work will be necessary for major assignments.
• One hour per night in Year 7, increasing each year to two hours per night in Year 10 should normally be enough to complete required homework but high achieving students often do more. In the case of assignments, planning ahead is essential to reduce the pressure when several deadlines occur near one date.
PARENTS'/CARERS ROLE
• Parents/Carers can help students by discussing homework and assignments (content, approach and planning) and by showing interest and support for their work. It is important for parents/carers to help with, but not to do, homework.
• Parents/Carers can help by assisting students with the filling out of the Student Term Planner and organising a study timetable with the student.
• Parents/Carers should keep a copy of their child's timetable in a handy place, e.g. on the fridge door.
